Keep Your Pets Safe & Cool This Summer

smart-puppy-on-beach

As summer gets into full swing, we’re going through our closets pulling out our t-shirts and shorts in preparation for fun in the sun. But what about our four-legged friends stuck in a permanent fur coat? Are they as affected by the midday heat as we are? (Spoiler alert: yes.) And is there anything we can do about it? (Also, yes.) Here’s the good news: beating the heat is as easy as ABC!

A. Always Plan Ahead
Remember, our companion animals are at our mercy when it comes to being out in the sun. While we can choose whether or not to take a midday hike or sit out in the backyard for hours, they have to go along with the decisions we make, even if it is uncomfortable or potentially dangerous for them. Heat stroke illnesses and deaths spike in the summer, stemming from three main categories:
Prolonged exercise in full heat is dangerous. People who take their pet out to walk or run during the hottest time of the day and don’t realize their pet is overheating. Limit your exercise times to morning and evening during hot months.
Leaving pets in cars. It’s a myth that cracking the windows makes the car cooler ... it doesn’t! Another common misconception is that the outside temperature needs to be high for pets to suffer. On a sunny 70 degree day, the interior can reach 90 degrees in 30 minutes. In 85 degree weather, the temperature can reach 120 in the same period of time! If you can’t bring your dog or cat inside with you on your errands, let them stay home. It simply isn’t worth the risk.
Too much activity and not enough water. I’ve seen pets get heat stroke just from playing in the yard on a warm afternoon. If you’re planning on staying outside with your dog, make sure he or she has plenty of water to drink, a shady place to retreat to, and maybe even a sprinkler or wading pool to cool down in.

B. Beware the Signs of Heat Stroke
Heat stroke symptoms can begin once the body temperature exceeds 103 degrees F. While most of us don’t carry a pet thermometer around, watch for these specific warning signs:
  • heavy panting
  • excessive drooling leading to a very dry mouth
  • extra-red tongue or gums
  • weakness or collapse
Brachycephalic breeds like bulldogs and pugs are especially prone to overheating, as are dark-haired breeds. Dogs and cats can and do die every summer from heat exposure, so if you suspect your companion animal is suffering heat exhaustion or heat stroke, go to the veterinary ER as soon as possible!

C. Clipping: What About a Summer ‘Do?
Many people like to give their dog or cat a summer clip to help stay cool. If this is something you are considering, talk to your groomer to ensure it’s appropriate for your pet’s breed. Dogs whose fur grows continuously - such as poodles and Lhasas - do well with clips, while double-coated breeds such as Akitas and Chows do not. In some cases, a pet’s coat may actually help keep him or her cool, rendering a clip counterproductive. If you do opt for a trim, make sure there is at least one inch of fur remaining so your beloved pup or kitty doesn’t get a sunburn.
Although heat-related illnesses are scary and serious, the great news is that they are also entirely preventable. With just a little foresight and planning, our furry friends can enjoy the summer just as much as we do!

DIY Pet Stain & Odor Remover ~ Accidents Happen!

Even good furbabies make mistakes! When your four-legged friend misses the piddle-pad or the litter box, it’s no fun for anyone. Don’t dismay! With this DIY pet stain remover, you and your furry family members will be cuddling odor-free in no time.

Pet Stain and Odor Remover Recipe

What You Need:

1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
15 drops YL Lemon essential oil
5 drops YL Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil
5 drops YL Purification® essential oil blend
2 cups baking soda (optional, for tough or already-dried stains)

What You Do:

If your furkid very recently left a puddle on the living room carpet, use these instructions for removing fresh stains:

* Add the YL essential oils to the salt and mix well.

* In a spray bottle, combine the salt mixture, apple cider vinegar, and water. Mix thoroughly until salt has dissolved.

* Blot the “accident” to remove excess moisture.

* Shake the bottle, then spray the stained area generously until wet.

* Let sit for 10–15 minutes.

Using an old towel or rag, soak up the mixture by blotting until moisture is removed. Do not apply heat to aid in the drying process as it can cause unwanted odors and stains to set permanently.

When you find an older, smellier, set-in stain, use the instructions above to make the DIY pet odor eliminator and then:

* Spray the area generously until wet.

* Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and leave for 24 hours or until dry. The baking soda will absorb the stain during this time.

* Once dry, scoop up as much baking soda as possible and discard, then vacuum thoroughly to remove any remaining powder.

Having a pet in the family means unconditional love, which, of course, means occasionally taking the messy with the abundance of good. For more tips on caring for your fluffiest family members, check out our posts on our Holistic Pets & Peeps! blog.

Five Reasons Why Pets Eat Grass

It’s a question pet parents routinely ponder. While there are competing theories regarding why dogs and cats consume grass, a conclusive answer has yet to be supported by scientific study. Here’s a brief overview of the current speculation behind your companion animal’s impulse to graze . . .

1. It’s an ancestral thing. The prey of wild dogs and cats frequently have grasses in their intestinal system, so domesticated dogs and cats still retain a yearning for a spot of grass in their diet.

2. Our companion animals know of some nutritional value in grasses that we have yet to uncover (such as antioxidants).

3. They do it to provoke vomiting if they’ve eaten something that has upset their stomachs.

4. They are augmenting their keen sense of smell with taste to discover more about their environment.

5. They simply like the taste and texture of grass, so it’s just for the sake of satisfaction!

Although we may never know the exact reason why ~ we do know that this is one of the most commonly asked questions that veterinarians hear from their clients. If you notice excessive grass-eating with either your dog or cat, please consult your vet.

This is also a good time to remind pet parents that treating your lawn with toxic chemicals can harm your pets and your family. Please choose green, non-toxic alternatives or allow your lawn to grow as nature intended!

Experts Beg Gardeners To Look For Hummingbird Eggs Before They Prune

Mother Earth is beautiful and abundant. When spring rolls around, animals go into a reproductive frenzy. With warmer weather upon us, it is crucial for you to learn what to do if you stumble upon eggs in a hummingbird nesting area.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued a warning on Facebook to help protect fragile hummingbird nests. Luckily, people care enough about preserving the environment and this beautiful species, since it was shared over a quarter of a million times.

The post features photographs taken by Kelly Campbell, which shows an incredibly tiny hummingbird nest resting precariously between the branches of an evergreen. Hummingbird nests typically weigh less than one-tenth of an ounce.

The USFWS urged people to be cautious with their accompanying message:

“Hummingbird eggs are tiny, about the size of jelly beans! Please remember to carefully check for nests before you trim trees and shrubs this spring.”

Their warning is important for all of us since hummingbirds live all throughout America. Whether you're a homeowner or a city-dweller, you always have an opportunity to stumble upon a nesting ground when you're outside.

Hummingbirds can live all the way down in Chile and also make their way up to Alaska! These tough, little birds nest wherever they can. They're especially fond of building their homes in gardens.

If you have your own garden, it's likely that you maintain it to admire the beautiful flora and fauna. Hummingbirds will be drawn to any garden with vibrant plants, bird feeders, and birdbaths. Gardens are a dream home for hummingbirds, so don't be surprised if one settles in and starts a family!

Female hummingbirds use moss, leaves, and even spider webs to construct their tiny nests. They prefer to nest over down-sloping branches with running water nearby, but they make do with whatever they can. They make sure to camouflage their nests with lichen to protect their eggs from predators, but this makes them more susceptible to unknowing gardeners who are just trying to maintain their land.

Now that you know where hummingbirds love to nest, be extra cautious next time you visit your garden. If you're pruning or weed whacking, take a little extra time to inspect for any tiny nests that may be hidden in your garden.

Of course, if you do happen to find a nest, never disturb it. Leave whatever stray branches or weeds that are surrounding it. Trust us, it'll be worth it once you see the dozens of beautiful hummingbirds zipping around your garden after they hatch.
