Recall Alert! OC Raw Dog Chicken, Fish & Produce and Freeze Dried Sardines

No illnesses have been reported, but OC Raw Dog is recalling some of its products for 2 different reasons. One of the reasons is some fish are large enough to cause a risk of botulism. Wow, that's a new one.

OC Raw Dog announced this as 2 separate voluntary recalls. The Chicken, Fish & Produce Raw Frozen Canine Formulation has the potential for listeria contamination — a state agriculture department has reported a positive test for listeria in a sample of the food, although there have been no reports to date of illnesses in pets or people.

The second OC Raw Dog recall, for the Freeze Dried Sardines, stems from the fact that the fish are larger than the FDA compliance guideline of 5 inches. The federal safety agency says larger fish like this carry a higher risk of botulism poisoning.

“Clostridium botulinum can cause severe and potentially fatal toxicity in both animals consuming the pet treat and people handling the pet treat or coming in contact with contact areas that have been exposed to the product,” according to the FDA.

Recall Alert! Vital Essentials Beef Toppers and Beef Entrée

This is the 4th recall of Vital Essentials in the past 3 years, and salmonella is once again to blame.

Salmonella. That's the feared contaminant in a recall of 2 different products from Vital Essentials (one for dogs & cats, and the other just for dogs).

What was recalled: The following 2 varieties and dates of Vital Essentials:

• Freeze-Dried Beef Toppers (for dogs and cats), 6 oz. packages, Lot #13815, Best by June 4, 2019, or June 20, 2019
• Frozen Beef Chub Entrée for Dogs, 5 lb. chubs, Lot #13816, Best by Dec. 27, 2018

According to the email, which Petful has confirmed with a company spokesperson, this recall arose out of concern that some of the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

“A single package of product, which was produced on the same day, was collected and tested by FDA for the presence of salmonella,” the email stated, adding: “We expect that very few, if any, packages remain in the market.”

No other Vital Essentials products are subject to this voluntary recall.

This is the 4th recall of Vital Essentials in the past 3 years, all because of potential salmonella or listeria contamination.

Recall Alert! TruDog Boost Me Mighty Meaty Beef Booster

TruPet LLC is calling this a "withdrawal" of a single lot of its beef-flavored Boost Me raw freeze-dried dog food topper. This is the 2nd recall for the company this year.

What was recalled: The company is calling this a “withdrawal” of a single lot of TruDog Boost Me Mighty Meaty Beef Booster, Lot #20190531 13815

We learned about this recall from a Petful subscriber (and TruDog customer) who shared the company’s email with us.

In the email, Lori Taylor, CEO of TruPet LLC, said, “We have decided as a company to withdraw the product from the market and replace it with new product immediately, as our new testing protocols have indicated there could be a risk for salmonella in 667 cases.”

Taylor stressed that only the single lot number listed above is part of this action, and no other TruPet products are affected. “And while this is a limited number of bags, considering we have boosted over 1,500,000 bowls — even one sick dog is too many in my book, and we are committed to being maniacs on a mission to ensure the safety of all our pets,” she said.

TruDog Boost Me is a raw “freeze-dried beef dog food topper and versatile supplement.” If you have a package of Boost Me Mighty Meaty Beef Booster with Lot #20190531 13815, call the company at 1-800-476-8808 for a refund or replacement.

Petful verified the email, and a customer rep named Sue added, “We have already notified the customers that were affected, and no dogs have been reported sick.”

TruPet has not yet, from what we can tell, alerted anyone other than the “affected” customers. The company apparently has not shared this news with the rest of its customers and has not shared the news with the general public. But all of us (i.e., TruPet’s potential customers) have every right to know.

So, this looks to us to be a textbook example of a silent recall ~ if we hadn’t shared this news today, YOU wouldn’t know about it right now.

When asked by Petful why the company has not opted to inform the general public of this recall, Sue responded that “only the customers who purchased this particular lot number would potentially have been affected by the withdrawal. Any future purchases of the Boost Me would not be affected.”

Another Petful subscriber, D., has written in to tell us she is a TruDog customer and did not receive an email from the company about this recall. Even though she didn’t have any product with the specific lot number being recalled, she says she still had a right to know. “I got pretty upset.… I have been ordering from them for a couple of years,” she says. “How unprofessional of them not to contact [all of] their customers.”

This is the 2nd recall of 2018 for TruPet LLC, and the 2nd in the company’s history. In February, a positive salmonella test from a state agriculture department led to a voluntary recall of a single lot of TruDog Treat Me Crunchy Beef Delight dog treats.

UPDATED: FDA Investigates Pattern of Contamination in Certain Raw Pet Foods Made by Arrow Reliance Inc., Including Darwin’s Natural Pet Products and ZooLogics Pet Food


The FDA wants consumers to know that Darwin's has a "pattern of contamination" and "a history of recalls and multiple complaints." Here's what you need to know.

This recall announcement ~ the latest in a string of Darwin’s recalls ~ was made public by the FDA in a blistering report chronicling numerous problems with this pet food over the past couple of years. At least 1 kitten has died of a salmonella infection after consuming one of the products, and other pets have reportedly been sickened.

The FDA seems to take particular exception to the fact that Darwin’s and its manufacturer, Arrow Reliance Inc., issue “silent recalls” rather than alerting the general public. “Arrow Reliance/Darwin’s Natural has notified its customers directly of the recalls, but has so far not issued any public notification announcing this or any of the previous recalls,” the FDA notes.

The agency maintains a “zero-tolerance policy” on salmonella and other bacteria in pet food because of the risk to both pets and humans. Pets can get sick from salmonella, listeria or E. coli ~ and they can also pass these bacteria on to their human companions. “Pet owners who choose to feed raw pet food should be aware of the risks associated with these products,” the FDA says.

Meanwhile, Darwin’s has been waging a bit of a war with the FDA, saying that the agency’s zero-tolerance policy itself is to blame for all the recalls of its products. Darwin’s founder Gary Tashjian has claimed that any pathogens in the pet food “are at such low levels that dogs and cats typically can process them without any issue.”

One thing’s for certain: The FDA isn’t holding back any punches. The agency seems to be on a mission to make sure consumers know that Darwin’s has a “pattern of contamination” and “a history of … recalls and multiple complaints.” And the FDA clearly feels that Darwin’s isn’t being transparent enough about these ongoing problems.

A single lot of Blue Ridge Beef BRB Complete frozen dog food is being recalled because of the potential for contamination with salmonella and listeria.

What was recalled: 2 lb. chubs of BRB Complete dog food, Lot #GA0131, manufactured January 31, 2018

According to the FDA announcement, “There has been no consumer or pet illnesses in association with this product. Blue Ridge Beef is voluntarily recalling this product lot as a commitment to consumer and pet health and safety.”

This is the 2nd recall of 2018 for Blue Ridge Beef. The company recalled a frozen raw cat food on March 1 for the same reason: potential salmonella and listeria contamination.

The affected lot of BRB Complete was distributed in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and North Carolina.

According to the company’s news release, “The FDA informed Smucker of 3 illness reports, and we immediately initiated a voluntary recall of the limited, impacted production.”

The dog treats were distributed nationally, and this recall is limited to the 2 specific varieties, dates and sizes noted above.

The FDA has said that “pets that eat food or treats containing thyroid hormones may develop hyperthyroidism, a disease that is rare in dogs and usually triggered by thyroid cancer.”

This is the 14th brand of dog food to be recalled so far this year, a dizzyingly high number for a period of just over 2 months' time.

We have learned about another recall of Darwin's pet food ~ the latest in a string of recalls in the past year and a half.

9. Redbarn Naturals 7 Inch Bully Stick

No illnesses, injuries or complaints have been reported. But testing by the Colorado Department of Agriculture found salmonella in a package of these dog chews.

11. Raws for Paws Ground Turkey Pet Food

Raws for Paws has recalled certain chubs of its Ground Turkey Pet Food because of the potential for salmonella contamination.

What was recalled: 1 lb. and 5 lb. chubs of Raws for Paws Ground Turkey Pet Food with a manufacture date of Oct. 12, 2017 (Turkey Pet Food cases) or manufacture dates between Oct. 12, 2017 and Feb. 2, 2018 (found in Combo Pack variety cases).

Please note that the recall involves a company called Raws for Paws out of Minneapolis — NOT to be confused with a similarly named company, Raw Paws Pet Food (of Indianapolis), which is not affected.

12. JustFoodForDogs

The company's first recall comes after preliminary testing revealed its human-grade green beans may be contaminated with listeria.
