The Secrets of Idaho Blue Spruce ~ Oily Science

Idaho blue spruce essential oil is derived from the blue-green twigs and leaves of the spruce tree, which thrive in the North American climate. Frequently used by early Native Americans, Idaho blue spruce has a long history of being used to treat various physical and emotional conditions. Two of its most active ingredients, alpha-pinene, and limonene, are mainly responsible for the health benefits this essential oil provides. Here’s a quick look at these two powerful constituents.
Alpha-pinene
As a phytochemical, alpha-pinene plays a significant role in our overall health and wellbeing. Several studies have been conducted regarding alpha-pinene and cancer. A Japanese study found that an environment rich with the scent of alpha-pinene decreased the growth of melanoma in mice by 40%, while two Chinese studies reported it also inhibits the growth of liver cancer cells. Due to the high percentage of alpha-pinene contained in Idaho blue spruce oil, it produces an environment filled with its scent.
Limonene
Native Americans often turned to blue spruce oil for emotional and spiritual balance. The limonene it contains has been found to reduce cortisol (also known as the “stress hormone”) levels in the body, helping relieve mental stress and depression, while also promoting a positive mentality. This also has a calming and relaxing effect that makes it a popular aromatherapy oil.
Additionally, recent studies indicate that Idaho blue spruce essential oil can increase libido and testosterone levels, though further research is needed to determine exactly how it does this.
