Animals & Essential Oils 101

For most pet parents, our animals are like our children and depend on us for everything . . . . food and water, grooming, shelter, and healthcare. That is why there is nothing worse than seeing them under the weather or in pain. Just as with any stressful situation, it is important not to panic and to stay as calm as possible. Animals sense our emotions, often through smell, therefore the best way to keep them calm is to make sure you are calm.

One of the biggest challenges a pet parent or animal caregiver can face in a moment of crisis or stress is trying to communicate with their animal. It is far easier to read an animal when that animal trusts you. You know your animal(s) better than anyone, therefore using common sense and your natural instincts can be very helpful.

When used properly and when keeping key facts in mind, essential oils are very effective in providing our animals with natural / holistic care that works!  I personally keep several essential oils on hand that are perfect for animal first aid. Knowing what you have on hand, which oils are most effective for any given situation, and what amount and frequency is appropriate for each animal in your care is crucial.

* I will preface this next section by stating that the ONLY essential oils I use and recommend are Young Living Essential Oils, as they are 100% pure, therapeutic-grade and have been proven to be safe and effective time and time again. As a holistic consultant, energy healer, animal Reiki practitioner and lifelong pet parent, I only trust Young Living for my clients and my own animals, as well as for myself!

Guidelines For Proper Usage:

~ The key to using essential oils with animals is to always go very slowly! Do not rush and do not force them on your animals. Most animals will respond much better to essential oils if they are comfortable with you and with the various scents of essential oils. Also, introducing them slowly will avoid creating any negative experiences or promoting any adverse reactions to the oils. Animals are highly sensitive to odors and may find a new smell too intense in the beginning.

~ An aversion to essential oils may be a simple dislike to the oil (or oils). This usually occurs when an oil has been aggressively introduced or improperly used. For example, an animal's face, nose or feet are highly sensitive areas, therefore any new smells must be introduced slowly and carefully. Aversions can arise very quickly and may take a long time to overcome, so the more time and patience you use introducing the oils, the better.

~ Start with very small amounts of whichever oil is needed for the situation you are addressing. Keep in mind that when using 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils from Young Living, one drop is usually plenty when you are just beginning. Until you are able to read your animals and see their reactions, make sure they are comfortable and do not exceed recommended amounts

~ Avoid using hot or irritating oils on your pets. If you are in doubt about comfortably using a particular oil on your animal(s), it is always best to err on the side of caution and find a suitable alternative using common sense and good judgment.

Tips for Calming Stressed Cats

beautiful-whiskery-kitty

It’s a common belief that cats are highly susceptible to stress. How many memes have you seen referencing “neurotic kitty”? But the truth is, a cat’s normal state shouldn’t be stressed, she should be happy and relaxed! If our kitties are constantly showing signs of stress and anxiety, we owe it to them to identify solutions to help them feel better.
So how do you know if your cat is stressed versus just being naturally feisty? Well, the signs are subtle. Oftentimes, it’s a subtle change in behavior that doesn’t even seem to be related to anxiety. Some of the more common changes include . . . .

  • Urinating or defecating outside the litter box
  • Isolating themselves from others in the household
  • Excessive grooming
  • Prolonged periods of sleep
  • Excessive vocalization beyond what is typical (remember, some kitties are naturally more talkative than others)
  • Increased scratching
  • Aggression

Over time, stress hormones can contribute to physical symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, changes in appetite or even the painful condition known as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). Be aware that these signs are symptomatic of other medical conditions, so don’t be too quick to assume you’re dealing with feline anxiety before discussing the symptoms with your veterinarian. One of the best ways to minimize the likelihood of chronic medical conditions is to feed your cat a high-quality, appropriate diet. Since you’re reading the Life’s Abundance blog, I’m probably preaching to the choir on that topic!

peeking-kitty

Let’s say your cat is exhibiting one or more of these signs of anxiety. You’ve brought her in for a check-up and medically, everything checks out. What next?
First, try to pinpoint the source of the stress and eliminate it, if possible. We tend to view these issues through our human lens, so it’s important to remember that unexpected things can be at the root of your cat’s stress. Some of the more obvious reasons include changes in living conditions ~ from divorce, moves, a new companion animal in the house, or new babies ~ to the most obvious physical cause, which is pain. But little changes can also provoke anxiety: new furniture, a neighbor’s dog barking, a dirty litter box, being denied access to their favorite location, a neighborhood tomcat taunting them from the yard, even music they don’t like! As you can see, it’s a long list.
Environmental modifications can make a big difference. For indoor cats, boredom can be a near-constant stressor, so provide lots of vertical space for exploration (they love being elevated). Home-built or store-bought cat trees are a great solution. Puzzle feeders can be a good source of environmental enrichment, as they appeal to their hunting instinct. Pheromone diffusers or sprays can also have a calming effect for some.

blue-eyed-kitty

And lastly, make sure your kitty is getting daily interaction and enrichment with you. It’ll build their confidence and form deeper connections with their caregivers. Believe it or not, many behaviorists recommend clicker training as a great way to bond with your cat. This gives her a sense of control over her environment and also offers the promise of a yummy incentive like Gourmet Cat Treats for Healthy Skin & Coat. Cats can learn amazing tricks with clicker training and treats, but it’s also a great way to reward good behavior generally.
Try to set aside some one-on-one time for your cat in the space where she is most relaxed. Optimally, this is something you’ll do every day at the same time because cats are true creatures of habit. No distractions, which means leave your phone in another room and turn off the TV. Brush, pet, sing . . . . do whatever pleases your cat the most. It’ll be good for both of you!
A happy cat means a happy you! If you think your cat is suffering from stress or anxiety, try some of these suggestions to help them live the “purr-fect” life.

Essential Oils for Dog Allergies

Dogs are wonderful companions, and an important part of our families, which is why we only want the best for them when it comes to their good health. Yet, there are times when a health condition arises where many of us prefer using a more natural, yet effective solution for our precious fur kids. That being said, if traditional vet care is in their best interest, we would never recommend abandoning common sense just for the sake of taking the natural path. There are excellent holistic vets who offer traditional AND holistic medicine combined, some of which even incorporating remedies such as essential oils.

Our primary purpose at Holistic Pets & Peeps! is to educate you as to when certain essential oils may be used for specific issues your pet may be experiencing. Therapeutic grade essential oils are incredibly powerful healing (and preventative) tools that are effective for the majority of dogs (and other animals), however, they may not work for every animal, and the information presented here is not meant as a "magic pill" or cure-all. Not all essential oils are created equal, which is why we only recommend Young Living Essential Oils. Therefore, when we refer to any oil, we are referring to therapeutic grade essential oils by Young Living that are trusted and proven for over 20 years.

Now, on to the very complicated subject of dog allergies. Many pet parents tend to just assume that whatever they are feeding their dog is causing him or her to have allergies. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. We will concur that there are far too many substandard pet products on the market today with questionable ingredients, so we do recommend that pet parents educate themselves as to what they are feeding their pets. Pet food, treats, supplements and pet care products is a subject that requires an entire article unto itself, however, we are happy to offer our recommendations upon request.

Just like people, dogs come in all shapes and sizes, which is why we are addressing essential oils and dosing guidelines right away. Please consider these approximate sizes of dogs when determining the use of essential oils, and remember, when in doubt, start slowly (less is better when introducing EOs) and gradually increase the dosage once you have determined that your dog (or other animal) is responding well to treatment with essential oils.

Small Dogs ~ 1 - 20 Pounds (0 - 9 kg)
Medium Dogs ~ 20 - 50 Pounds (9 - 22 kg)
Large Dogs ~ 50 - 100 Pounds (23-45 kg)
X-Large Dogs ~ 100+ Pounds (45+ kg)

Dog allergies often require a full holistic health consultation, as well as expensive in-depth blood work to fully evaluate the underlying cause (or causes) of the allergies themselves. And yes, diet can be one of the culprits, depending on what you are feeding your dog. (For a great selection of premium holistic pet foods, treats & products, please CLICK HERE!)

Another huge culprit is household cleaners, air fresheners, sprays and other toxic items that are in your pet's face (and under their feet) every single day! If you want to see the world from their vantage point, we encourage you to get down on your hands and knees and imagine being bombarded with these things at their eye and smell level day after day. Whatever you clean with, freshen with, spray around the house is absorbed by your pets through their eyes, nose, skin, mouth and paw pads.

Changing household cleaners, first-aid, and other personal care products to Young Living products not only eliminates harmful chemicals but provides more exposure to beneficial therapeutic essential oils on a daily basis . . . . for your pets and for your entire family!

Treatment recommendations for battling allergies (other than switching to a healthy, holistically formulated diet) are as follows:

~ Diffuse:  Clove, Thieves, or Lavender

~ Antihistamine Oils to be Applied Orally, Topically, and / or Diffused:  Melissa, Ocotea,  Basil, Lavender

~ Anti-Inflammatory (steroid alternative):  Raindrop Technique

~ Nutritional Supplements:  Allerzyme, NingXia Red, Omega Blue, Sulfurzyme, Life 9

~ Other:  Animal Scents Shampoo, Thieves Household Cleaner (Cleaning & Bathing)

Secondary Recommendations:

~ Polyzyme, Mightyzyme, Detoxzyme, Digest + Cleanse, Inner Defense

Additional Recommendations:

~ Give an Allerzyme digestive enzyme with every meal.  For Large Dogs ~ 2 or more capsules may be necessary.

~ Give NingXia Red with 1-2 drops of Lavender Essential Oil added. This may be given straight or mixed in with food.

Should you wish to get started with your own oils and products, we recommend that you enroll as a wholesale member in Young Living by purchasing the Premium Starter Kit, which gives you the Everyday Oils, a bonus oil called Stress Away, a Home Diffuser, as well as samples to try or share. This is an excellent investment in your health, as well as the health of your animals.

You also have the option of joining as a Retail Member, as opposed to a Wholesale Member, so it is completely up to you. There are also options for monthly Essential Rewards orders, which earn you points that you can spend on additional products, as well as promotional items every month that you can earn for free, just by shopping for what you already need.

YL Essential Oils and Pets: A Quick How-To

You love to share essential oils with your family, so it makes sense that you want to share them with your pets as well! Before you begin using essential oils for pets, you need to know the answers to some important questions. Can you use essential oils on dogs, cats, and other pets the same way you use them on yourself? How much should you use? What is the best way to administer oils for topical and internal use?
Check out our quick and easy how-to guide and get tips and info that will answer your questions about essential oils for dogs, cats, and other animals!*

Basic Guidelines

Essential oils and pet
There are some general tips and suggestions you’ll want to keep in mind as you share essential oils with your furry friends.
* Do not use essential oils on and around cats under 10 weeks old, and avoid using oils on and around puppies.

* Animals are generally more sensitive to essential oils than humans are. It’s best to heavily dilute essential oils and use them in moderation.

* Every animal is different, so carefully observe how your animal responds to essential oils. Use common sense and good judgment as you try different methods.

* Be especially careful to not get essential oils in an animal’s eyes.

* If diffusing, always allow cats to leave the room as well as access to areas where they can avoid the diffused oil.

* With all animals, avoid using high-phenol oils ~ such as
Oregano, Wintergreen, Clove, Mountain Savory, and Thyme. This is especially important with cats.

* Use special caution with cats and essential oils. Avoid applying citrus oils topically, diffusing the scent around cats, and having your cat ingest them.

Every animal is different so use your best judgment and basic common sense when it comes to your own pets. For example, my cats love to be near the diffusers throughout the house but will leave the room if I am diffusing an oil they don't care for. Mostly, they love the oils and will lick them off my hand when I use them topically. I have experienced no adverse effects with any of our animals over the many, many years I have been using Young Living. And, even my Animal Reiki clients respond well to the oils! Animals are incredibly intuitive regarding their own needs, therefore, I allow the animals to "talk" to me when working with them.

Essential Oil Acclimation

Your pets may need some time to adjust to the new scents and sensations of essential oils. Use these tips to introduce your pets to essential oils in an easy and comfortable way.
* Wear essential oils throughout the day so your pets will be exposed to the aroma as you hold them, play, or snuggle on the sofa.

*Diffuse essential oils in spaces where your pets like to relax. Keep in mind that dogs tend to stay in a room with their human even if something is bothering them. Closely watch for signs of irritation ~ such as whining, sniffing, nervousness, and excessive scratching ~ while diffusing around them.

* Apply an essential oil to your hands and let your pets smell them so they can explore the scent on their own terms.

* If your pets are jittery or resistant to essential oils, try applying an oil to yourself and staying near the pets for several minutes so they can get used to the aroma.

* Use extra caution around birds, fish, and pocket pets!

V-6 Vegetable Oil ComplexDilution for Topical Application

Your animal’s size affects the amount of oil you should use and how much you should dilute for topical application.
* For cats, small dogs, and other smaller animals, use a carrier oil ~ such as V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex ~ to dilute the essential oil before application. We suggest at least a 4:1 ratio of carrier oil to essential oil.

* If you’re using essential oils on medium-sized animals ~ like large dogs ~ dilute 3:1 carrier oil to essential oil.

* For very large animals ~ including horses and cattle ~ start with a 1:1 dilution and, if desired, move to the directions indicated on the bottle.

Topical Use

Once your pets are used to essential oils, they’ll better handle topical application. Keep these tips in mind as you experiment with using essential oils on your pets.
Animal Scents Ointment* We recommend applying to the paws for dogs, using the "petting" method for cats, and to the spine and flanks for animals with hooves.

* For easy and comfortable application, rub oils (and carrier oil) between your own hands and then apply by stroking the animal.

* For easier application in large or hard-to-reach areas, combine essential oils with V-6 or with water in a spray bottle. Spray into your hands and then apply to animals rather than spraying directly on the animal . . . especially smaller animals who may not like the spray bottle.

* Use Animal Scents® Ointment to seal and protect any areas where essential oils have been applied.

Internal Use

Animals can ingest essential oils, but you need to follow some general rules before you serve up an oil-infused meal for your pets.
We recommend consulting with a trained veterinarian who has experience with essential oils prior to administering oils internally to your pets. You should not attempt to mix oils with food unless directed by a veterinarian. If you choose to mix essential oils with your pets’ food, keep in mind that the smell may make the food undesirable to the pets; this is especially true for cats.

* If you apply oils to your pets’ paws, they will likely lick and consume some of this essential oil as they groom and play. Make sure you dilute heavily so the amount your pet ingests or absorbs is minimal.

* Never force your pets to consume essential oils or food mixed with essential oils.

Supplemental Products

Young Living also offers a full line of animal-specific products, including essential oil blends made just for animals, cat treats, dental pet chews, and Animal Scents® Shampoo. Log on to our website and search 'Animal Scents Pet Care' to find something your pets will love!

DIY Paw Balm Infused with Essential Oils

There’s little worse than watching your furry friends in pain. After hikes, playdates in the snow or on hot pavement, and daily walks with the family, your dog or cat might need some TLC. Always check your pet's paws when they come in from the outdoors. Pets can pick up gravel or salt (for melting ice) or pesticides from the grass as well as ticks and other insects. Start with keeping pet-friendly paw wipes near the door so it's easy to wipe their paws when you return home. After they spend all day on their precious paws, this homemade ointment is sure to do the trick with a soothing paw pad massage.
Try this DIY paw balm to keep your pet’s paws happy all year round!
What You Need:

What You Do:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small pot and place over medium heat until everything is melted and mixed well.
  2. Pour into a small glass storage container and let cool for 2–3 hours or until fully solidified.
  3. Massage a small amount into your pet’s paws when in need of a little extra pampering.

*If your pet or animal has a known health issue, please consult your veterinarian before administering essential oils.
