The Secrets of Idaho Blue Spruce ~ Oily Science

Idaho blue spruce essential oil is derived from the blue-green twigs and leaves of the spruce tree, which thrive in the North American climate. Frequently used by early Native Americans, Idaho blue spruce has a long history of being used to treat various physical and emotional conditions. Two of its most active ingredients, alpha-pinene, and limonene, are mainly responsible for the health benefits this essential oil provides. Here’s a quick look at these two powerful constituents.
Alpha-pinene
As a phytochemical, alpha-pinene plays a significant role in our overall health and wellbeing. Several studies have been conducted regarding alpha-pinene and cancer. A Japanese study found that an environment rich with the scent of alpha-pinene decreased the growth of melanoma in mice by 40%, while two Chinese studies reported it also inhibits the growth of liver cancer cells. Due to the high percentage of alpha-pinene contained in Idaho blue spruce oil, it produces an environment filled with its scent.
Limonene
Native Americans often turned to blue spruce oil for emotional and spiritual balance. The limonene it contains has been found to reduce cortisol (also known as the “stress hormone”) levels in the body, helping relieve mental stress and depression, while also promoting a positive mentality. This also has a calming and relaxing effect that makes it a popular aromatherapy oil.
Additionally, recent studies indicate that Idaho blue spruce essential oil can increase libido and testosterone levels, though further research is needed to determine exactly how it does this.

Dog Weight Issues & What You Can Do About It!

Have you noticed that your dog is looking . . . well . . . a little rotund lately? A bit more curvaceous than usual? You’re not alone! Approximately 54% of dogs in the United States are classified as overweight. But just because Fido has lots of company doesn’t mean that he’s in the clear. Extra weight is linked to a variety of health problems, including arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

How to Tell if Your Dog is Overweight ~ You know your dog better than anyone ~ so you’ve likely already noticed if he has gained weight over a relatively short period. But extra bulk is a bit more difficult to recognize if he’s been slowly packing on the pounds over the years. Here are two fail-safe ways to determine if Fido is at the correct weight:

Feel his ribs: Run your hands along his sides toward the tail, feeling for his ribs. If you can find them beneath a thin layer of flesh, he is probably at the correct weight. If you can barely feel them under a layer of fat, he is likely overweight.

View him from the top and side: A visual inspection of your dog’s body is also important. Look at his body from above. Does he have an hourglass shape, with a slight narrowing behind the rib cage? Also, view the lines of his body from the side. Does his stomach tuck up behind the rib cage? If the answer to both questions is yes, he’s likely at the correct weight. If his body has no definition from above or from the side, he is probably overweight.

What to do if Your Dog is Overweight:

Take him to the vet: Have a vet examine your dog just to make sure that he isn’t experiencing a health problem. Some conditions, such as thyroid disease and Cushing’s disease, can cause rapid weight gain.

Cut back on meals: It’s quite possible that you’re feeding Fido too much at mealtimes. Often the serving size on commercial dog food labels advises a larger portion than is necessary for an individual dog. Every dog is different, and every dog also metabolizes food differently. With this in mind, start out with the recommended serving size but observe your dog carefully. If he looks like he’s gaining weight, slowly cut back on how much you’re feeding; if he appears to be losing weight, feed slightly more until he’s at the recommended weight for his breed. Then simply maintain the portion size that works for your dog.  You may also want to try feeding a quality, premium Weight Loss Formula for Adult Dogs!

Feed him on a schedule: Dogs who are “free-fed” ~ given access to their food bowls all day ~ are more likely to be overweight than those who eat on a regular schedule. To help keep Fido healthy, schedule his meals at consistent times and take his food bowl away after 10 to 15 minutes.

Provide healthy treats: Supplement correctly portioned meals with healthy, low-calorie treats, such as cut-up veggies, plain popcorn, or other healthy treats. Make sure that you account for the calories in treats when feeding your dog his meals ~ these should be subtracted from his total caloric allowance for the day.  For healthy, natural, never recalled wholesome treats, try Wholesome Hearts Baked Low-Fat Treats for Dogs.

Exercise him: Of course, any diet plan should be accompanied by the proper amount of exercise. Keep your dog active by making sure that he gets a few daily walks and multiple lively play periods ~ but work up to this gradually. An overweight dog won’t be able to sustain this kind of energy level overnight.

Continue to assess your dog’s progress on a monthly basis to be sure that he’s at a healthy weight, and maintain, maintain, maintain when he has reached his goal! A nutritious diet, meals fed on a regular schedule, and exercise will add years to his life. ♥

The Empty Nest and Your Pets

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow ~ The end of summer can leave us all feeling a little blue, and pets are no exception. Like all of us, pets can quickly become adjusted to a summer schedule and a routine where someone is always around. Unfortunately, after summer, the extended vacations wind down, kids go back to school and the extra attention pets get during the summer comes to an end. This abrupt change in their summer schedules can lead to separation anxiety in dogs and cats which can be expressed on their part in a number of ways.

Pets quickly take notice of cues the family may give such as putting on shoes or getting a backpack ready before going out the door. Often times these cues will cause a pet to act out excitedly by barking, jumping and displaying other anxious behaviors. These are all signs of the pending separation anxiety your pet is feeling.

Signs of Separation Anxiety ~ Your pet can display separation anxiety in other ways, too. If you notice an increased number of ‘accidents’ in the home, increased howling or barking, or even trying to escape the home or yard, this may be your pet’s way of displaying that it’s having a rough time adjusting to the new family schedule.

While pet parents are aware their pet may be feeling anxious about their absence, many might not be aware of the things that can help to put their pets at ease.

What You Can Do to Help ~ One great exercise a family can do is to adjust their pets to the new schedule gradually. For instance, in the first couple of weeks leading up to a drastic schedule change, a family can help the pet adjust by leaving the home for short amounts of time, then gradually lengthening that time away. This way your pet can get used to the idea that everybody will be gone, but still be reassured of their return.

When it comes to leaving the house, a short goodbye is always better than a drawn-out process. It is a good idea to have everything you need ready by the door and when it comes time to leave, just grab everything and go. If you spend time feeling bad about leaving the pet, it can increase their anxiety levels and make your leaving harder on them. By keeping things brief and upbeat, your pet will get the message that leaving isn’t a big deal and they can better look forward to the family’s return. You can even keep treats handy by the door to create a positive association with your exit rather than something to be dreaded.

Another great way to ease their anxiety is to leave them something stimulating during their absence. A rubber toy filled with peanut butter or sweet potato and left in the freezer to harden will keep a dog busy for quite a while. You can also leave a number of their favorite toys out to play with while you’re gone. Classical music left on the radio along with soothing scents (ask me about calming essential oils you can diffuse!) can also be used to keep your pet’s mind at ease.

And the best way to alleviate symptoms of separation anxiety is to give your pet plenty of exercise. Not only does vigorous exercise release the endorphins that help keep a pet happy and healthy, but tired muscles equal a tired pet, and tired pets are more likely to sleep while you’re away. Exercise and play are great bonding experiences between pets and their parents and the closer the bond between you and your pet, the more likely they are to remain stress and anxiety free during your absence.  ♥

Beat the Bedtime Blahs ~ Seven Tips for a Better Night’s Sleep

How you end the day makes all the difference. Your evening routine can either set you up for a cheerful and fulfilling day or one full of frustration and exhaustion. Here are seven steps you can take to create a successful bedtime routine that will give you more restful nights and more productive days.

  1. Set an alarm for bedtime.
Try setting an alarm for one hour before you’d like to be settled in bed to remind you that it’s time to step out of your day and start winding down.
  1. Drink up!
Since you end up going 6–8 hours without any liquid at all, drinking water throughout the day and before you hit the sack is essential to keeping yourself hydrated. Try adding Lavender Vitality™ essential oil to your water or herbal tea for a calming influence. Aim for an hour before bed, so you aren’t waking up in the middle of the night for a bathroom trip.
  1. Give yourself a little face time.
Make sure to give your skin and teeth the TLC they need. Refresh and renew your face with a mild wash such as our ART® Gentle Cleanser. You should also use gentle products on your teeth that are free of synthetic dyes and fluoride such as our Thieves® AromaBright™ Toothpaste and Thieves Fresh Essence Mouthwash. Taking time to establish and follow this important hygiene ritual will help you feel fresh and relaxed before bed and can signal to your brain that it’s time to calm down.
  1. Take notes for tomorrow.
Write down a brief game plan for a productive tomorrow. While creating your list, remember to envision the kind of day you’d like to have, how you’d like to feel, and the top priorities you’ve got in your sights. Get it down on paper and you won’t spend hours trying to fall asleep thinking about what your day might look like.
  1. Set yourself up for success.
The night before, prepare your outfit, your breakfast, and lunch, or complete other tasks you’d usually take care of in the morning. The fewer tasks looming over you, the quicker and happier you will be getting out of bed in the morning.
  1. Ditch the tech and read a book.
The light from electronic screens can trick your mind and body into thinking it’s still light out. Try leaving technology out of your bedroom to help you shift into to a calm, relaxed, and clear state.
  1. Add essential oils to your routine.Stress Away
Try diffusing LavenderStress Away™, or your favorite blend of essential oils with comforting aromas as you prepare for bed. Rubbing a couple drops between your palms and brushing them over your pillow can also boost the relaxing aromas and can make jumping into a cloud of pillows and blankets feel extra luxurious.
Once you’ve worked out a routine that helps you sleep well on a regular basis, create a ritual of those steps so your body and mind are prepared for a good night's sleep and a successful day ahead.

Get started on YOUR amazing essential oils journey today!

How Essential Oils Benefit Our Animals

Young Living Essential Oils ~ Helping You Have Healthy Pets

If you are like most pet parents, you love your animals and consider them part of the family . . . . and for good reason.  Animals bring us laughter, joy, companionship, and love and are a meaningful part of our lives.  That is why their health is so very important to us.

Young Living Essential Oils can be a powerful health tool to help you care for your animals. Before I proceed, I must emphasize that everything I write or share about Essential Oils is referring ONLY to Young Living Essential Oils, as they are 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils that are guaranteed for purity and potency.  You can only get YLEOs direct from an authorized distributor (which I am), and the company . . . . so, please do not run off to the health food store, or high-end grocery store and purchase oils that are of a lesser grade and quality, and that are not safe for ingestion or topical use!  You may contact me directly with any questions or concerns regarding this difference.

How Essential Oils (EOs) Benefit Our Animals . . . .

1.  Supports Immune System ~ Essential Oils work on the cellular level to stimulate the body to respond to infectious agents. They impact the body by increasing the lymphocytes and improve the immune system response. Immupower, Thieves, Raven, and RC are some examples of blends that help support the immune system.

2.  Provides Antimicrobial Elements ~ Essential Oils have been found to be more effective than some conventional antibiotics in eliminating infectious agents. The range of effectiveness includes resistance to viruses, bacteria (double resistant to pseudomonas infection, which affects dogs), parasites, and fungi (chronic unresponsive fungal infection, which affects cats). Clove, Lemon, Melaleuca (Tea Tree), Eucalyptus, and Rosemary all have antimicrobial elements.

3.  Eliminates Pain ~ Many Essential Oils relieve pain and can be used with a warm moist compress. The addition of moisture enhances the effectiveness of the oil. They are useful for bone, muscle, tendon, and ligament pain. Use with other modes of pain relief provides another option. Essential oils can be used more often than conventional medication and spans the gap that often occurs with oral or injectable analgesics. EOs stimulate endorphin release which activates pain relieving neurotransmitters. Post-surgery, the oils are also used to give pain relief. They can be applied topically on the area of concern or used orally with other pain relievers. Most of the time, the oils are used on an as-needed basis. Some blends and oils that help eliminate pain are PanAway, Relieve It, Mountain Savory, M-Grain, Peppermint, Wintergreen, Black Pepper, and Balsam Fir.

4.  Provides Anti-Inflammatory Protection ~ Chronic disease is the result of inflammation in the body originating from injury, diet, infection, or toxins. Anti-inflammatory effects of the EOs provide the body a chance to heal from these bodily assaults. Thyme, Helichrysum, Wintergreen, Peppermint, and Balsam Fir all work as anti-inflammatories.

5.  Reduces Stress ~ Pets experience stress much the way we do. Research has shown they are very similar to us in their response to stress, as well as the side effects caused by stress. Evidence of stress can be seen in litter box issues, excessive grooming, aggression (chewing things, breaking through doors, destroying rooms, etc.), and appetite loss, just to name a few examples. Essential Oils give the pet parent a natural method to correct the issues and relieve the stress. Often, corrective behavior techniques are more successful when EOs are used in conjunction with environmental changes. Peace & Calming, RutaVaLa, TraumaLife, Gentle Baby, Valerian, Petitgrain, Lavender, and Roman Chamomile are some of the oils and blends that help to reduce stress.

6.  Restores Sleep Habits ~ As animals get older they seem to have a harder time at night . . . . from signs of restlessness to having to go to the bathroom . . . . and their sleep habits suffer because of it. Some of this is due to pain or disease, but other cases are due to cognitive dysfunction disorder or senility.  EOs can provide an alternative to euthanasia so quality of life can be maintained for some time. Antioxidant activity of the EOs is high, which help the body restore itself at night. NingXia Red, Longevity, BrainPower, and Clarity are the most commonly used blends for sleep disorders.

7.  Improves Coat and Skin ~ As with other cells of the body, the antioxidant effects of the oils can restore health to the coat. The overgrowth of yeast or bacteria can cause various skin metabolism issues and the EOs provide a healthy environment for regeneration of the skin. Lavender, Geranium, Tea Tree, Patchouli, Frankincense, and Myrrh are all good oils and blends used to improve the coat and skin.

8.  Minimizes Upper and Lower Respiratory Infection ~ Cats are commonly infected

with respiratory disease . . . . especially farm kittens. The use of Essential Oils in this circumstance is effective because bacteria, viruses, and parasites are sensitive to EOs. The anti-inflammatory effect is helpful in decreasing the secondary asthma that can occur in cats. Bronchitis in dogs is another disease that is treatable with EOs. Left untreated, it can become a long-term condition. Decreasing inflammation and infection in the respiratory tract as early as possible decreases the severity. The EOs are also helpful as an early treatment resolution.  The best oils and blends for respiratory infections are Lemon, Eucalyptus, Raven, RC, Rosemary, Ravensara, and Frankincense.

9.  Assists in Digestive Challenges ~ Essential Oils provide a natural way to de-worm, are soothing to the digestive tract, assist in correcting garbage toxicity or car sickness, and improves digestion overall. They relieve nausea, diarrhea, indigestion, and gas. Peppermint, DiGize, Ginger, Nutmeg, Idaho Tansy, and Clary Sage work well with the digestive system.

10. Promotes Cardiac Health ~ EOs have the ability to improve circulation by increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery to the cells. The body is healthy and stronger. For improved cardiac health, Cypress, Grapefruit, Basil, Ylang Ylang, and Spikenard work best.

11. Balances the Endocrine System ~ The body needs to be aligned in order to function. Cats get hyperthyroidism while dogs more likely get hypothyroidism or Cushing's. The EOs keep the body centered to prevent hormonal imbalance and fine tune imbalance. Clary Sage, Fennell, Myrrh, and Lemongrass are the best for this.

12. Supports a Healthy Urinary System ~ Renal insufficiency and bladder stones, infections, and inflammation are common in pets. Essential Oils are helpful in restoring bladder health, increasing renal function through improved circulation and antioxidant activity. Raven, RC, Tea Tree, Orange, Lemon, and Rosemary support a healthy urinary system.

13. Helps Lacerations, Abscesses, and Abrasions ~ Essential Oils are helpful in resolving infections due to injury and in the healing process. Lavender is especially useful for abrasions and burns, but Melrose, Geranium, and Rose are also helpful.

14. Supports Muscles and Bones ~ Osteoarthritis and anterior cruciate injury is common in the active dog and cat.  As pets live longer the issues of age-related changes are more common. EOs can be used to help give a better quality of life to your pets. There are many blends and individual oils that improve movement, help repair injury, and provide pain relief. Some of these include PanAway, Relieve It, Black Pepper, Peppermint, Balsam Fir, Wintergreen, and Mountain Savory.

15. Improves Oral and Dental Health ~ Pets need dental care as much as their pet parents. Part of this involves control of infection and eliminating pain. Thieves ~ a unique blend of antimicrobial oils ~ is very effective for this purpose. Using before and after normal dental care cuts down on the amount of bacteria build-up in the animal. As a preventative, Thieves will decrease dental disease return while also working as a pain reliever after extraction. Along with Thieves, Mountain Savory, Peppermint, Myrrh, and Clove all help in your pet's oral and dental care.

16. Increases Alertness ~ As your pet ages, normal habits may lag, accidents may happen, and your pet may not enjoy life as much as he or she used to. Essential Oils have a profound effect on reestablishing old habits, especially Brain Power, Clarity, Cedarwood, Lemon, Sandalwood, Lavender, Vetiver, Orange, and Frankincense.

17. Protects Against Cancer ~ Essential Oils have been studied and have shown promising results in being a part of the cancer treatment plan. EOs have also been used for Melanoma in horses and dogs with great success. Frankincense, Palo Santo, Ledum, Spikenard, Citrus Fresh, Lemongrass, Lavender, Clary Sage, and Tsuga are some of the better EOs that help fight cancer.

18. Is a Safe Cleaning Agent ~ Many pets ingest cleaners . . . . especially those that drink from the toilet bowl or lick areas where cleaners are used. Thieves Household Cleaner is a safe alternative to the caustic cleaners. Lemon, Clove, Rosemary, Purification, Tea Tree, and Eucalyptus are other effective agents.

19. Slows Bleeding ~ EOs can be used to stop the bleeding of a nail or pad. They are very effective and work quickly. Helichrysum, Cistus, and Geranium work best.

20. Eliminates Odors ~ Pets commonly have accidents in varying circumstances. Both younger and older pets of all types struggle with this.  Other animals, like cats, often inappropriately urinate if stressed. Essential Oil blends have been used for these problems of odors and stains. Purification, Thieves, Lemon, Orange, and Citrus Fresh work best to help neutralize odor problems.

Should you wish to get started with your own oils and products, I recommend that you enroll as a wholesale member in Young Living by purchasing the Premium Starter Kit, which gives you the Everyday Oils, a bonus oil called Stress Away, a Home Diffuser, as well as samples to try or share. This is an excellent investment in your health, as well as the health of your animals.

You also have the option of joining as a Retail Member, as opposed to a Wholesale Member, so it is completely up to you. There are also options for monthly Essential Rewards orders, which earn you points that you can spend on additional products, as well as promotional items every month that you can earn for free, just by shopping for what you already need.
